Life continues to tick. Businesses are starting to resume. Restaurants, schools, parks, non essential stores are reopening. Life is resuming back to normal even as COVID-19 continues to plague and kill thousands everyday. However normalcy is yet to seep in for thousands of daily wage workers in Mumbai, who continue to stay back in the city of dreams, in the pursuit to survive.
We embarked upon our journey of feeding daily wage workers during COVID-19 on 29th March. Within three days with the help of DP’s Fast Food chain of restaurants with we set up 4 kitchens at Matunga, Dadar, Chembur and Ghatkopar.
In the month of May we added our fifth kitchen in Malad. We also had 3 successful cloud kitchens in Mulund, Shivaji Park and Prabhadevi for couple of weeks. Over 40 plus kitchen staff and 35 volunteers relentlessly working day in & day out braving Corona were cooking and distributing around 10,000 plus Free Khichdi meals daily.
We are currently covering fourteen plus - lower income group area slums throughout Mumbai.
At Ratna Nidhi, we intend to continue the Khichdi program for the next 3 months. Despite news reports doing the rounds of daily wage workers returning back to their villages, there are thousands of people who have stayed back as businesses slowly reopen.
We foresee that it will take 3 more months for things to resume back to normal, and for daily wage workers to be employed and start earning a living again.
Our work on the field highlights that there are thousands of people who still don't have the means to earn or feed their families. The lockdown opening up hasn't solved the crisis but is just a start to this goal. It is for those people that we continue serving and intend to do so for the next 3 months.
