As the Coronavirus pandemic grips countries across the world, there is widespread fear and panic as well as massive disruptions and dislocations. People in underprivileged communities are facing shortages of food and shelter, medicines and masks. One of the worst hit states is that of Maharashtra, with Mumbai city alone affecting thousands of vulnerable families and individuals.

Ratna Nidhi responded to the crisis by serving hot nutritious khichdi meals to daily wage workers in Mumbai. Over 1 million khichdi meals have been served since 29th March 2020. The meals were served to daily wage workers all over Mumbai.

A lot of these people have been rendered jobless due to the pandemic and are left with little or no means to provide for their families. The Khichdi meals provided, came as a blessing in disguise to all the beneficiaries in these challenging times. The project has ensured daily sustenance for these workers, making sure no one had to sleep on an empty stomach.

Meals were distributed in Borivali, Malad,Kurla, Byculla, Dharavi, Parel, Mazgaon, Matunga, Bandra, Dharavi, Vikhroli, Mulund, Bhivandi, Mankhurd, Andheri,Vile Parle, Chembur, Ghatkopar, Dhobi Talalo, Colaba, Fountain. Ratna Nidhi has set up 5 kitchens at Malad, Matunga, Dadar, Chembur and Ghatkopar. The meals are then cooked, packed in hygenic containers and delivered to the identified beneficiary group.

The distribution of the Millionth meal was celebrated in the presence of Honorable Mrs. Varsha Gaikwad, Maharashtra Cabinet Minister of Education at Dharavi on 22nd September 2020.
